Concept

Brief: An apartment complex for the elderly - community living for the old(11,000 sq m).

The concept behind this project is chosen with care to provide a better quality of living for people in their twilight years. An environment, that stimulates the minds of the elderly is the main focus of this project. It is implemented in site organisation, programming and planning.

The footprint of the building is decided using sun-path and shadow analysis, to maximise the period of shadow on the outdoor spaces.

The programming of the site is focused on outdoor activities. A creche for the little ones, a small cafe and a playground for the young adults welcomes the neighbourhood into this community of elderly so they can people - watch and not feel isolated from society.

A garden/nursery has been included in the outdoor space to give the elders something to nurture. Additionally, neuroscience suggests that a place that keeps varying overtime is good for the mind and the best way to do it is by using nature as design elements.

The planning of the dwelling units is done in such a way that, the private space of the users and the communal space are connected seamlessly. All the dwelling units are connected by a common balcony overlooking the outdoor space encouraging a sense of community among apartment neighbours.
